Behind the MusicWhat was the first song you ever bought? I bought the Dixie Chicks’ album “Fly” with my mom when I was in third grade, but looking back at it now, some of the lyrics are highly inappropriate for an eight-year-old. (For instance, “Goodbye Earl” is definitely about murdering an abusive husband by means of poisoned black-eyed peas). What song always gets you dancing? Just about all of them, but I can’t seem to stop fist pumping to “Don’t You Worry Child” by Swedish House Mafia. Also, Ke$ha. What song takes you back to your childhood? “Two Pump Texaco” by Diamond Rio and just about anything by Garth Brooks in the early to mid-90s. This may shock many of my friends today, but I grew up jamming out to classic country in the car with my dad. What is your perfect love song? Easy – “I Want to Know Your Plans” by Say Anything. It’s adoration in an MP3. What song would you want at your funeral? “Thrash Unreal” by Against Me!, because I’ve always envisioned my funeral as being some kind of triumphant, punk rock opera. Time for an encore. One last song that makes you, you? “23” by Jimmy Eat World. To me, it perfectly encapsulates the beautiful sadness and strangeness that comes along with the growing pains of being a young adult.
Hello, world! I’m Amy.
Hi, everyone! My name is Amy Carl, and I’m a recent graduate from the University of Houston and 20K Group’s brand-new junior account executive! I’m thrilled to start my career with a team of such talented people and to learn from their expertise. Prior to graduating as valedictorian of the University of Houston’s Jack J. Valenti School of Communications (not-so-humble brag), I was lucky enough to hold several internships in the communications field and become active in the UH chapter of Public Relations Students Society of America (PRSSA). I’m committed to being an active alumnus and supporting the next generation of communications students any way I can; I give my friends and mentors a huge amount of credit for helping me succeed personally and professionally. I’ve always had a passion for writing, reading and editing, and in this industry, I know my grammar fanaticism will be put to good use. Much of my previous experience was with nonprofits, and I’m eager to use that knowledge to help grow and promote my community. However, I’m new to agency life and am excited to use my abilities to think creatively and strategically for 20K Group and its clients. As a recent graduate, I bring to the table boundless optimism, old-fashioned book learning and a sense of endless possibility. As a newbie with a lot to learn, I don’t think I could have chosen a better place to start my career. I’ve only lived in Houston since August 2011, and I’m slowly, but surely, exploring the city. I’m always open to suggestions about fun new places to eat, drink and recreate in my spare time, so let me know your favorites in the comments section! Traveling is one of my great passions. I don’t think there’s any better way to be exposed to new cultures and ideas. That said, I’ve already traveled fairly extensively and now realize there’s no place like home. Taking inspiration from my fellow 20K’ers and a much-maligned VH1 special, I’d like to invite you Behind the Music and invite judgment upon my pedestrian musical tastes. Or, if you’d like to get to know me beyond the confines of this blog post, feel free to connect with me on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
