What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you a social media wiz? Media relations guru? Master of event planning? We all have perceptions of our own skill sets and strengths and weaknesses. But what do your peers see? It’s difficult to know exactly what others think about you, but LinkedIn’s endorsement tool may do just that by allowing you to take a look at yourself through another's lens. At one time you probably entered your "Skills and Expertise" on LinkedIn to highlight your specialties. Now, with the introduction of “endorsements,” there's a good chance your connections have supplemented that information by selecting the areas in which they think you excel. By looking into those endorsements you can begin to piece together others' perceptions of you. Example LinkedIn Endorsements Do the endorsements align with how you would like to be recognized? Maybe, you consider yourself to primarily be a Facebook expert, but most of your endorsements have come for skills in email marketing. Based on your endorsements, you can adjust how you market yourself to better promote the skills that haven't been endorsed yet. It could also help you realize which skills are your most desired or marketable. Taking stock of your colleagues' views of your talents is an important step in managing your brand and achieving your career goals. Find out what people think you're good at already and adjust to make sure they know about the skills you'd like to pursue further. To quote Yogi Berra, "You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there."
